The Biggest Threat to SEO, is the practice of SEO.
If that's confusing, allow me to elaborate.
Yesterday I was scrolling down my Twitter feed, and saw this TikTok video talking about how more and more people are using TikTok search instead of Google search, because of the higher quality search results.
Personally, I agree with her.
I've stopped using Google for a lot of things, namely:
1, Anything travel related. It's a cluster f*ck of aggregator sites that just regurgitate the same listings.
2. Anything cooking/recipe related. Every recipe is 40 pages long in order to trick the algorithm into ranking.
3. Anything home services related. We recently renovated our home and using Google to try and find contractors was a complete nightmare.
This is just a few examples, but the list goes on.
I REFUSE to Google anything marketing related, because all of the top articles are just a regurgitation.
Borrowed ideas pieced together to grab the top spot. No insights, no original thoughts, just a pile of marketer bullsh!t.
Is it Google's fault?
No, it isn't. They've tried to keep SEO's from manipulating results for more than a decade.
Is it our fault?
Yes, it is. We as SEOs are slowly the platform that provides a living for us.
We've eroded the platform that pays us, and consumers are taking notice.
I can already hear the echoes and boos in the comments about how Google is still the most used search engine, blah, blah and it depends on what people are looking for.
I agree - certain things Google is just better for.
But a lot of those "certain things" have no business value.
As consumers move more towards social to search for products, clothing and services, the value of our services go with it.
Is SEO dead?
No.
Is SEO dying?
Debatable.
Is SEO changing?
Yes, 100000% yes.
SEOs tend to get extremely butt hurt when anything encroaches on our practice, but it is what it is.
Google (as a search product) isn't that great anymore.
I'd chalk that up to the constant manipulation of the algorithm that hundreds of thousands of SEOs work towards on a daily basis.
So when your paycheck dries up, there's only 1 place to look.
