20% of CMOs to invest less in paid search, SEO this year

Paid search advertising and SEO are among the channels most likely to have reduced investment in 2023, according to Gartner’s latest CMO Spend and Strategy survey. But it’s not all bad news for search marketing. Search advertising. Although 26% of CMOs planned to reduce their investment in paid search, 40% of CMOs said they plan to increase investment in this channel. ICYMI: Paid search spend is forecast to hit $110 billion in the U.S. this year. SEO. While SEO was identified by 20% of the survey respondents as a channel to reduce investment this year, 46% of CMOs planned to increase their SEO budget. Social advertising and beyond. Surprisingly, 53% of CMOs planned to invest more in social advertising, compared to 14% who are decreasing investment. Two other categories that can expect more budget in 2023: digital video advertising and influencer marketing. Google Site names now support subdomains on mobile devices

Google now supports Site names for subdomains on mobile devices, the search company just announced. Google wrote , “Site names are now supported for subdomains on mobile devices.” Google updated its help documentation to specify subdomains on mobile. Site names. Site names is the title and name of the site Google shows in the search results listings. “When Google lists a page in search results, it shows the name of the site the page comes from,” Google explained. Meta fined $1.3 billion by EU for privacy violations

Meta has been hit with a record $1.3 billion fine by the European Union for breaching data transfer laws. What happened. Facebook transferred the data of EU citizens to the U.S., violating the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) , according to the Irish Data Protection Commission. Meta’s European headquarters are in Dublin. What the ruling means for Meta. Meta has been given five months to stop future transfers of personal data to the U.S. and six months to cease unlawful processing and storage of EU/EEA users’ data in the U.S., according to the ruling. Why we care.  If the ruling is put in place, Facebook would have to delete a huge amount of data and restructure its IT systems at a very fundamental level. It also would have enormous implications for any company transferring data between the two areas. Nearly 30% of Instacart’s revenue is from advertising

Instacart made $740 million in ad revenue in 2022, a 30% increase over 2021. Surging ad business. The Information reported: “The grocery-delivery firm’s ad revenue totaled about $740 million last year, up 30% from 2021, according to a person familiar with the matter. That’s a striking increase, given that the digital ad market was largely stagnant last year. Nearly 30% of Instacart’s 2022 revenue came from selling advertising rather than actually delivering groceries.” Ads accounted for about 20% of Instacart’s $1.5 annual revenue in 2021 – about $300 million – according to a June 2021 Insider report. For comparison. Advertising accounted for about 10% of Amazon’s revenue in 2022, according to The Information. Meanwhile, Amazon made $37.7 billion in revenue through advertising last year. U.S. paid search spend forecast to hit $110 billion in 2023

Paid search spend is expected to reach $110 billion this year, according to a new eMarketer forecast. Search and retail media.  Paid search represents 41.8% of total digital spending. If it reaches $110 billion, its growth will remain slightly higher (at 8.2%) than overall U.S. digital ad spend, which is expected to increase by 7.8%. Within search, retail media networks (RMNs) are a rising star, with 18.7% growth in retail media search. This segment is projected to be near $30 billion in spending in 2023. RMN digital ad revenue (not just in search) is on course to rise from $31 billion in 2021 to $45 billion this year. If spending continues at its current rate it should surpass $106 billion in 2027. Google Chrome will soon add 6 relevance and measurement APIs

The Privacy Sandbox initiative, a project led by Chrome, is introducing new key relevance and measurement APIs to Chrome Stable. This move is scheduled for the third quarter of 2023, with the spotlight focused on Chrome Stable 115 as the specific launch pad. Unveiling the specifics. Meta starts refunding advertisers for overspending glitch

Meta is starting to issue refunds to advertisers impacted by a glitch last month that resulted in overspending and higher than usual CPAs. Why we care. Meta needs to make this right for all of its advertisers of all sizes. It’s good that the refunds are starting, but it’s been over a month and this still is not resolved. May 12. Some advertisers got their refunds starting on May 12. However, many smaller advertisers are complaining that the process has been much slower for them, Bloomberg reported: “Some advertisers did receive refunds from Meta beginning on May 12, although the amounts have been doled out inconsistently and it’s not clear why some businesses received more money back than others. In the past, advertisers that spent a lot on Facebook or had personal connections at the company had better luck getting refunded, according to several agency representatives.” The glitch. 50% of product searches start on Amazon

Amazon continues to be the most popular starting point for online shoppers with one exception – Gen Z, according to a new survey. Why we care. Google Bard adds genuine citations in responses and more concise summaries

Google Bard has added classic and more genuine citations to the answers it provides and also is able to provide better summarization. We do not yet see these improvements and enhancements live yet but Jack Krawczyk from Google shared some examples on Twitter . Citations improved. Google Bard now shows sources with numbers, like true citations, next to the responses. You can click on the numbers to see the source for that information. “Bard can now help you identify which parts of a response match a source. For the responses with sources, you’ll see numbers alongside the response. Search ad conversion rates down, cost per lead up in 2023

Paid search advertising conversion rates have decreased across nearly all industries year over year. Meanwhile, the cost of generating leads through search ads continues to increase, although not as drastically as in prior years. That’s according to a new 2023 search advertising benchmark report from LocalIQ’s WordStream. It features data on the average conversion rate, cost per lead (CPL), click-through rate (CTR) and cost per click (CPC), compared to 2022. Why we care. It’s good to understand whether you doing better or worse than your competitors in paid search so you can optimize for better results, at a lower cost. As always, in PPC, you want to always strive to be than average. Conversion rate: 7.04%. Only two industries (Beauty and Personal Care, Education and Instruction) avoided a decrease in conversion rate from search ads. Has your list of followers on LinkedIn changed? If so, it’s because LinkedIn said it is now removing “hibernated” and “restricted” accounts from the connection and follower counts of all members and will continue to regularly do so heading forward. Elon Musk today announced that Linda Yaccarino will be the next Twitter CEO. The announcement. Despite having gotten the jump on Google when it launched the new Bing , featuring its own generative search experience fueled by GPT-4, data shows Microsoft has failed to gain market share. In fact, if the latest numbers from StatCounter are directionally accurate, it appears Bing is actually losing market share to Google. Why we care. It would be nice to live in a world where we didn’t have to rely so heavily on Google. It was encouraging to see Bing making some small gains . But we later learned the New Bing attracted new Edge users who then used Google Search . Google will replace FID with INP as Core Web Vitals metric

Interaction to Next Paint (INP) will replace First Input Delay (FID) as a Core Web Vitals metric starting in March 2024, Google announced at Google I/O today. Google hinted at this change for about a year now. But now it’s official . What is Interaction to Next Paint? INP is a metric that uses data from the Event Timing API. It assesses the responsiveness of a webpage. An interaction that causes a page to become unresponsive results in a poor user experience, Google said . INP observes the latency of all interactions a user has made with the page and reports a single value which all (or nearly all) interactions were below. Google provided the following example of what poor versus good responsiveness looks like: On the left, long tasks block the accordion from opening. This causes the user to click multiple times, thinking the experience is broken.
