My boyfriend and I argued yesterday about who IT specialists are and what IT actually is. He believes it encompasses everything related to programming, system administration, and so on. I, of course, vehemently disagree with him, and here's why.
After all, IT stands for information technology, in the broadest sense of the word. It's about working with information.
Therefore, at the center of the IT galaxy, or the IT solar system if you prefer to operate with smaller objects, we find ourselves, journalists, copywriters, and anonymous telegram channel holders.
Somewhere close, but a bit further away, there are SEO specialists who promote and advance ideas, knowledge, and meanings. Sometimes they also sell some goods just to make a living.
And even further away, on the edge of the IT sphere, there are all these amateur coders, pointlessly wasting time in offices and at home. Somewhere there as well are beta testers and scrum masters (like my sister, haha!), trying to get these slackers to work.
On the opposite edge of the IT periphery are doctors and gypsy fortune tellers. They have much in common. Doctors make diagnoses and sometimes guess correctly. Gypsy fortune-tellers look into crystal balls or card spreads and also sometimes predict the future or the past. It's also working with information.
Somewhere closer to the center of the IT galaxy are librarians. Like diligent beetles, they distribute books on the shelves, and sometimes, sneakily, they read them. Yes, I think they indulge in this despicable activity during working hours.
But there is a caste of people who are closest to IT. These are, of course, government officials, civil servants. They work with information all the time: they endlessly write reports, read documents, compile statistical references, issue instructions, and implement directives. They are the real IT specialists!
And who are you, dear reader, an IT specialist or not?
