Long-time reader, first time question.
We have a major web transition coming soon (one generation to another) and our URL structure is changing. Of course, we'd like to ensure keep our SEO through transition. We understand the best practice is to have 301s that link from the prior URL to the new URL. However, we have approximately 1k pieces of content that require 301s. AWS server limits are 100.
Wildcards are one tactic we can use to overcome this limitation. For instance, we could cut the list from nearly 1000 to several dozen by simply redirecting all traffic from /old-folder/old-sub-folder/content-name to /new-folder/content-name, no matter the actual content name.
However, we’re unsure as to whether the use of wildcards instead of using specific /old-folder/old-subfolder/content name => /new-folder/content-name will result in negative SEO impacts.
Would it? Any thoughts here? Thanks so, so much!
